Thekchen Pema Choling Monastery, located in Salleri (Ward No. 5) under Solududhkunda Municipality, the district headquarters of Solukhumbu in the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal, is a Mahayana Buddhist monastery (temple) and a center for Buddhist studies situated in the lap of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.

Monks from this monastery have been providing religious services, including various rituals and ceremonies, both regular and urgent, across different villages of Solududhkunda Municipality. At present, the monastery is home to 25 monks, including students, who are engaged in the study and teaching of authentic Mahayana Buddhist traditions. Regular Buddhist classes are also conducted for the general public starting from 4:30 AM, through which a large number of local residents have gained knowledge of Buddhist teachings.

Established in 2052 B.S. after its initiation in 2050 B.S., and officially registered in 2058 B.S., the monastery is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary (Silver Jubilee) in 2083 B.S. with various programs and events.

In the coming days, the monastery plans to contribute to community health through the campaign titled “Monasteries for Community Health.” Under this initiative, it aims to provide Vipassana meditation training in local prisons and schools, organize discourses by Buddhist scholars for the benefit of the community, and promote youth participation. Additionally, starting from 2025, the monastery plans to organize an international-level event called the Sagarmatha Monastery Mountain Marathon, inviting external athletes and tourists.

In the near future, the monastery also plans to construct a community building named Sherpa Culture and Art Center, along with a Lumbini Garden to attract tourists and improve the quality of life of the people of Salleri.

Thus, as an integral part of society, the monastery continues to serve the residents of Solududhkunda Municipality through various initiatives, while striving to spread the teachings of Lord Gautam Buddha to the general public and guide all beings away from worldly suffering. It seeks cooperation and support from everyone in this noble mission.

Beginning of Construction

The plan to build the monastery was initiated to preserve and promote Buddhist religion and culture in Salleri.

2052 B.S.
Establishment of the Monastery

Thekchen Pema Choling Monastery was formally established, and initial religious activities began.

2058 B.S.
Official Registration

The monastery was officially registered with the Government of Nepal and received formal recognition.

2065 B.S.
Establishment of Buddhist Education Center

A Buddhist education center was established within the monastery premises, where regular teachings of Buddhist philosophy and practice began.

2070 B.S.
Expansion of the Monastery

The monastery premises were expanded and new buildings were constructed to meet growing needs.

2075 B.S.
Expansion of International Relations

Connections were established with Buddhist organizations from various countries, enhancing the monastery’s international recognition.

2083 B.S.
Silver Jubilee

Plans are underway to celebrate the 25th anniversary (Silver Jubilee) of the monastery with various programs and events.

Chief Lama Phurba Sherpa (Head Lama)

Chief Lama Phurba Sherpa has been providing spiritual leadership to the monastery for many years. He has received education from a renowned Buddhist university in Tibet and possesses deep knowledge of Buddhist philosophy and practices.

Er. Tenzing Sherpa serves as the Chairperson of the Monastery Management Committee. With extensive experience in engineering, he has played a key role in the monastery’s physical development and construction.

Ngima Tendup Sherpa is the Secretary of the Monastery Management Committee. He is responsible for daily administrative tasks and coordination, and actively works to strengthen the relationship between the monastery and the community.
